PPS conducted a study in 2023 to track pasture quality decline throughout the spring and early summer.

The results were revealing, highlighting the importance of regular feed testing and strategic supplementation to maintain flock productivity.

• Pasture quality can decline rapidly: Even with seemingly green pastures, protein and energy levels can drop below sheep requirements, particularly in dry conditions.

• Species matter: The study showed variations in the rate of quality decline between different pasture species. For instance, Barberia ryegrass retained quality longer than Wimmera ryegrass, while legume content significantly boosted protein levels in mixed pastures.
